IMF Optimistic about Global Economy in 2017 and 2018

But Managing Director Christine Lagarde expressed apprehension beyond the near term

April 17, 2017:  The International Monetary Fund (IMF) foresees a positive outlook for the economy across the globe in 2017 and 2018. But IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde has expressed her apprehension beyond the near term.

"Our forecast for 2017 and 2018 is certainly more favourable than what we have seen in 2016, and probably a bit more so than we had forecast previously," Christine has opined prior to the releaseof IMF’s world economic outlook."There is a positive short-term outlook on the horizon, which is unfortunately tainted by the risks that are still there, and that lead us to be concerned about the risk of complacency."

After a meeting in Berlin on April 10 with the chiefs of other leading global economic organisations and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Christine opened up on her concerns about the global economy. "I also identified two key concerns that we at the IMF have: one is persistent low productivity and, second, excessive inequalities that grow together with that low productivity.”
